Territory

The territory predominantly involved in our game is the protectorate of Telgar Weyr: the mountain Weyr and all Holds, major and minor, located within those areas. (Note: Southern Telgar Hold belongs to Igen Weyr.)

This includes:

  • Telgar Weyr
  • Telgar Hold
    • Greenfields Hold
    • Hold Balan
    • Miner's Hold
    • Campbell's Field
  • Crom Hold
    • Masterminer Hold
    • Greenfields

Climate

Our territory lies in Pern's cold mountain zone, and as such boasts a mostly cold climate for much of the Turn. The temperature rarely rises above 55 degrees Farenheit even in the warmer months of the Turn, though warmer air blowing up off the plains often means that it's actually slightly more comfortable base of the mountain than it is higher up.

The People

Telgari are among some of the palest Pernese along with those from High Reaches. This is not universal, of course, and depends strongly on the individual's genetics and forebears and how long their ancestors have inhabited the tropical region, but skintones of light tan to pale white are normal. Those who came from other Weyrs, of course, and who don't have Telgari blood will look different and exhibit different reactions to the cold.

The people themselves are hardy and able to withstand much both physically and emotionally. They understand the importance of using everything in moderation and are not wasteful. If they kill an animal, all of it will be used and eaten. Frivolousness is not in their nature and they show anything from discomfort to derision upon witnessing it. THey know the value of a mark and will not be mislead or fed a bad deal.

Dress

Because of the cold, native Telgari typically wear either very heavy clothing that they can layer as they see fit, or, in the deeper summer months, lighter clothes but typically layer that too in case of a sudden cold snap. Hide is mostly worn in the winter but the lush farmland means that wool and even cotton are featured heavily in even the most lowly Telgari's attire. Cotton shirts and pants/shorts are common in the summer.

The Weyr

Telgar Weyr is the sixth Weyr on the Northern Continent. It is located in the northern part of the Central Plains. It bordered with High Reaches Weyr in the northwest, Fort Weyr in the southwest, Benden Weyr in the northeast and Igen Weyr in the south. Telgar and Crom Holds are beholden to Telgar Weyr. Telgar Weyr is quite likely the second largest Weyr on Pern; having reached a capacity of six hundred dragons by the Second Pass. This vast amount of caverns for living in a single place was likely achieved with the help of the miners who inhabited Telgar Weyr in its early days.

It was founded after the mininghold at Telgar began expanding and establishing farmland, requiring a full-time Weyr to protect it. As it was initially a mining hold, its caverns were primarily cut by miners.

Although not yet an official Weyr, the caverns that would later become Telgar Weyr had been used throughout the First Pass to temporarily house Wings who could not fit in the severely overcrowded Fort Weyr.

Eventually, it was decided in the twentieth year of the First Pass to establish a Weyr at the Telgar settlement to protect the settlers there, as well as one on Big Island and another on the east coast where the remaining settlers on the Southern Continent were preparing to move to (the future Ista Weyr and Benden Weyr, respectively). The location of two more sites was also noted (the future High Reaches Weyr and Igen Weyr).

Benden Weyr was the first of these Weyrs to be occupied. Despite them being planned earlier, historical records indicate Ista and Telgar Weyr were the last two Weyrs to be established. This could be a retcon, although it could be that the dragonriders were later forced to establish High Reaches and Igen Weyrs sooner to protect settler growth in those areas.

Exports

Telgar is one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, of the major Holds. It houses the prestigious Smithcraft; contrary to current belief, the Crafts and not the Hold was the reason for settling this rich valley. The water-driven wheels that spin in the swift current of the Telgar River to the northeast of the Hold have curiously shaped parts which are older than anyone can remember. Other minor industrial Crafts have their home here as well. Farriers and blacksmiths are sent here from all over Pern to learn skills to take back home. Telgar is famous for its etching and engraving, and its skill at producing all types of printed fabric, silk screen, and batik. Until recently, the Woodcraft was here, but it was moved to Lemos, nearest the best supply of wood, after the Mastersmith and the Lord Holder of Lemos gave their approval.

The vast fields in Telgar produce most of the grain consumed throughout the north. And for those looking for a good pint, the best beer on Pern comes from Telgar, brewed from that very grain.
